When most people think of the metal-making process, they picture a stream of molten metal pouring into a mold-- it makes a nice visual for films and when you consider making parts with powder metal, it may be a little harder to picture the process -- or why one would bother with powder metal in the first place.

Making Metal Powder. The first step in the overall powder metallurgy (PM) process is making metal powders. There are four main processes used in powder production: solid-state reduction, atomization, electrolysis, and chemical. Solid-State Reduction. Metal powders are the base materials for the production of metallic component through the conventional powder metallurgy route or the emerging field of additive manufacturing.

In any of these process routes, the properties of the finished product depends on the character of the base powder from which it is produced which is equally dependent on the process of production of the base powder.

This chapter considers the feasibility of direct conversion of mineral to metal powder using a new electrochemical method, the FFC Cambridge process (Fray, Farthing and Chen).

The discussion will be on the background of electrometallurgy and powder metallurgy, the principles of the new process and its application for metal powder production.
